i joined - not too long ago, and you ask for what reason?
and i try not to read the rant section, because there is enough ranting in the other sections of the forums - hence why i respond after three pages of posts...

Actually, I checked your profile. I agree there's plenty of ranting everywhere, especially lately. I was sarcastically informing the readers that the typical thread like this usually goes on for several more pages before it dies out ... and is replaced by a similar one a few weeks/months down the road.

In any group/organization with a high membership turnover, those who have been around through several cycles will often be cynical about "great news ideas" which have been tried/suggested before.

I try not to discourage people from creative problem-solving, but feel obliged to let you in on a bit of the history and membership dynamics as I've experienced them.

There are lots of ways to learn how to make 'portraits' or whatever you want to call 'good kid photos'. For that matter, ANY snapshot of a kid or pet or whatever the subject may be is a GOOD photo. It's good to the person who took it. Referring back to my original post once again... These photos, for the most part, can't expect to be accepted by the general public as 'competition worthy' photos.

I have some free time this weekend and I believe I will scour DPC for kid and pet photos that I think are great examples of what people should strive for if they want to make them 'competition worthy'.

DPC, where all the photos are above average ....
--with apologies to Garrison Keillor

I generally think you have excellent judgment about photos. I hope you want to continue to help those who want to improve to do so. Remember when you're looking at submissions to a challenge, you have no way of knowing if they were submitted by experienced DPC'ers or someone (like me) who found it the day before the deadline and wanted to jump in.

I think after the challenge is the time to see if there's some kind of site-wide creative malaise or a lot of newer members.

I look forward to seeing your choices -- I bet I'll agree with 90% of them! I might suggest posting PAIRS of photos using similar subjects/themes, and "contrast and compare" them to show what makes one better than the other. Feel free to use one of mine for the "bad" photo as I know many of them need plenty of improvement!

well, i am involved in a number forums on different topics
the overall theme here is good, i think the forums need to be moderated better.

there should be a search option for the forum threads
the search should be stressed as a resource, and cross topic thread posts should be directed toward an older response.
or directed to run a search.

i got a response tonight - for instance of a thread i posted to 3 months ago - at another forum.

i use forums as a resource for many topics and am coming to find this a difficult one to use -

as far as this thread goes:

John: Didn't you have a voting scale posted somewhere once? (I'm not holding you to it, just curious.) I thought I recalled the scale having a 5 be something like "meets the challenge, but it's not much more than a snapshot you'd feel good about hanging on the refrigerator". Or something like that. Does this mean you're scale's going to be changing? Or has it changed already, and this is the result?

Some folks like to take pictures of children and pets, others like to shoot trains... Wouldn't it be nice if we could all respect everyone else's vision enough to let them choose the subject they want to work with? Some folks would try and shame others into avoiding Children, pets, flowers, flags, religious icons, nude bodies, insects, spiders, chess sets, and trains as subjects for their work...

... worry about your own viewfinder.

John, I just looked through your portfolio and notice that you have no shots at all of kids or pets... Have you ever tried it? It might give you a greater respect for the work of those that do...

He actually has some very nice shots of his cat (Potter, I think the name is) and his neice(s?) and nephews. I guess they are just not in his portfolio.

I have a ton of shots of kids and pets :) I do know what it takes to do them and do them well. :)

I've watched this topic grow page by page. Why not READ what was posted OVER and OVER from get go by John then make your post ? He's NEVER said ALL kids and pet photos ! Let me repeat myself ... He's NEVER said ALL kids and pet photos ! What he did say is there ARE some good pet and some good kid photos. He said don't just snap and click. Take your time and learn and submit the best you can. He recently posted a long comment to THIS photo. Maybe go read that then form your opinions. It's getting VERY old reading post after post when you haven't a clue as to what the topic is about. Most...NOT all...come to DPC to learn. Gordon, John and a few others are great tudors and can and do help a LOT here yet they are the very ones that get jumped daily. It's a shame. I think a few people need to put their keyboard up and pick up the camera and go practice from what I see in the challenges lately. If this hurts your feelings or pisses you off, then it's probably about you :)

Just curious. I just remembered that scale this morning and it got me to wondering. With your thoughts on snapshots, I thought maybe you would consider snapshots to generally be "below average". I look at a 5 as being average. I thought I remembered a 5 including snapshot-quality pictures that meet the challenge. So that had me wondering if your opinion of snapshots was lowering, and if your scale would be as well.

No real hidden intentions or arguements there, just curiosity.

I've seen at least a couple of kid shots from John, and they've all been great shots. Here are a couple from some past challenges:

Needfull Things
The Pouter

So ... I took a photo of my baby cousin Ariel this morning. Which is it, photograph or snapshot?

Does it matter?

Nope! But, for example, what if I'd entered it for "At Rest?"

To me, this was a snapshot, because I wanted some pictures of my new baby cousin, but we were leaving and I only took a few shots, without worrying if I got the perfect head shot or anything.

But, it's what I like to think of as an (attempt at an) artistic snapshot; paying deliberate attention to framing, light, subject's pose/expression, DOF (to the extent I can with my camera) and so forth. It might not have the same interest to others as it would to family members, but probably somewhat more than a (flash) photo of a baby just lying on a bed.

And what about the "fully edited" version?

Thanks! I just made it a duotone and applied a selective blur (oval mask, highly feathered).

Well General, I like the orig. the best. The colors look natural, unlike John's "Needful Things" where the colors of the lad's face and teeth appear wrong to me. Might be exactly the look John wanted due to the sun glasses.....

As far as your 'artistic' picture...a bit more of the child's face and less toy might be better if you were trying to sell this to mom and dad. Not so much less toy you can't tell what it is, but less. Some sparkle in the eye too, and iris color if there is any would be nice.
This may not make it an interesting wall hanger for the general public but it sure would not be the dreaded 'snapshot'. It might work well in Parents Mag. or a toy addv. as well as in a family album.

John's "The Pouter", is the better photo of the two but without the title the photo would leave me wondering 'what was the photographer wanting me to see here'? ie: The title makes this a qreat photo.

Let me add...all three of these are much better than I can DO myself but I do know what I like and dislike of each of them.

Thanks, but it's pretty funny to me! (See the recent threads on color-blindness).

So basically a tighter crop and a little airbrushing or dodging? I'll try that later, thanks!

Well, actually, no. Some repositioning and lighting changes. Of course if you had rather do it in the computer I guess thats OK too. Just don't enter it in one of the dpc contests unless it is one of the special ones where such editing is allowed. ;)
