Thanks for all of your comments! Actually, I thought of this pic when I was walking down the street with my esteemed colleague Josh Li (the Kobe of dpchallenge), and I bumped into the statue of Fiorello LaGuardia. It was perfect for an advertisement because of its facial expression and the position of its hand. I was busy with finals, so I just used anything I had in my hand to take the picture, which in this case was a bottle of Pepsi. It looked good so I submitted it.

1. I tried to get the best angle possible at the time, and this one happened to be the best. There were trees and buildings all over, and this angle minimized the "busyness" of the background.

2. I used the maximum fill flash on my camera, which failed to eliminate the shadow on his face. I didn’t have time to come back on a different day or time.

3. I also tried to get an angle to minimize the sun’s glare off the bottleâ€Â¦ but I probably could have done better at a different time of day.

4. I am not about to wipe that stuff off his face. Besides, the “drooling” effect was kinda funny!

Cute idea .... a little too much glare on the label of the product .... not a good thing if you are trying to sell it!

I am Coke man, myself, and really, really don't enjoy drinking Pepsi, but this ad worked on me anyway. Great job.
05/12/2002 10:08:00 PM
Clever. Can't imagine Pepsi using it, however.
05/12/2002 09:44:00 PM
Nice picture, interesting statue...it seems it would look empty without the bottle there
05/12/2002 09:41:00 PM
Very cool idea. The lighting seems a little off to me. Maybe too bright in some spots while too dark in others. Very cool shot.
05/12/2002 07:52:00 PM
My fave Pepsi ad. good job.
05/12/2002 05:18:00 PM
Good composition and nice idea.
05/12/2002 02:24:00 PM
Really like the idea. I see just a few minor problems: glare on the Pepsi bottle is too strong (maybe if you shot at a slightly different time of day to remove), the buildings in the background (a different angle to either make them a more or less prominent feature of the image), and the tree branch kind of looks like it's balanced on top of his head (again, slightly different angle).

Hmmm...Pepsi ad, or commentary on someone's acting style...?
05/10/2002 11:25:00 PM
I really like this one. Lighting is a tad uneven for a 10 (label too bright and has streek and the face is too dark) Without adding lighting you did good. The angle is perfect.

Isn't that Bill Hailey? Should of been titled ''Pop around the clock'' Love the composition and framed perfectly. Its a shame the face is not more illuminated, otherwise brilliant.

Great photo
05/09/2002 10:25:00 PM
This is very unique! It looks so perfect!
05/09/2002 03:24:00 PM
This is hilarious. Excellent idea, it's great. Did you notice that it looks like the statue is drooling?
05/09/2002 11:55:00 AM
this is a really funny, cool idea, and the angle you shot at is perfect...maybe a little more light on the head next time?
05/09/2002 05:01:00 AM
This photo has loads of humour appeal. Job well done.
05/08/2002 03:35:00 PM
Pretty funny. Just a bit too much reflection in the label. It may have required shooting at a different time of day or blocking the bright sun a little. The branch is distracting, too.
05/08/2002 07:57:00 AM
I think this pic is awesome! very very funny. you should send it to pepsi!
05/08/2002 04:27:00 AM
A little different angle for the Pepsi bottle may have helped reduced the glare, but I like the concept
05/07/2002 11:29:00 PM
What a clever idea! This made me laugh.
05/07/2002 10:41:00 PM
Very thoughtful, good one.
05/07/2002 08:51:00 PM
Great idea, I'm dying of thirst! Dramatic framing. I like the way you've got right up close, filling the screen with the image.
05/07/2002 06:03:00 PM
I really enjoy this pic. I like the angle and your choice of display of the product. Well done!
05/07/2002 05:50:00 PM
If only it was a coca cola bottle ;-)
05/07/2002 03:50:00 PM
great imaginative setup!
05/07/2002 12:26:00 PM
Very creative! I like it!
05/07/2002 10:49:00 AM
well done
05/07/2002 10:47:00 AM
Great idea. There is a little too much glare on the Pepsi label and it could have used more light in the face area.. Keep up the good work... :)
05/07/2002 03:52:00 AM
Very well set up, nice composition... the lighting is a bit harsh though, especially since the highlight on the pepsi bottle cuts through the logo. I really like the hands and how the bottle is positioned in them.
05/06/2002 10:57:00 PM
Good idea for the ad. The only thing I didn't like about this photo is the "S" in Pepsi is glared. If you're trying to sell this product, the bottle of Pepsi is the most important focus of the picture.
05/06/2002 10:25:00 PM
it would be nice if the lighting on the pepsi bottle was better
05/06/2002 08:28:00 PM
NIce set-up. There seems to be too much light on the Pepsi, maybe just a little adjustment in where you stand to take the pic. Plus the tree branch on the top is just a bit too close to his head. Still a good shot!
05/06/2002 07:37:00 PM
Super Idea! The lighting is a bit harsh on the bottle.
05/06/2002 06:59:00 PM
It would be WONDERFUL, if only his face were brighter!
05/06/2002 05:24:00 PM
Very Nice. Should have whiped the pigeon poop off of his chin, but I won't penalize you for it. One of my favorites.
05/06/2002 02:21:00 PM
Brilliant
05/06/2002 02:00:00 PM
Great use of a fixed asset!!! The guy's face is a little dark, otherwise, great advert! Photo 9 Advert 10 Creativity 10 total 10
05/06/2002 01:46:00 PM
this one is very cute.. original... lighting would have made this much better.
05/06/2002 01:30:00 PM
one of the best photos as far as creativity. the only draw back is the lighting on the bottle, which is hard to control in outdoor shots. overall though this is a great picture.
05/06/2002 12:18:00 PM
Very neat!
05/06/2002 12:02:00 PM
Ha! Tree limb is distracting and the glare on the bottle.
Still fine idea.
05/06/2002 09:47:00 AM
This is a well thought out concept... I like it! The lighting is a little harsh on the pepsi bottle and the face on the statue is a little dark. I can't tell if this is just sunlight or not, but a fill flash may have improved the overall image just a bit :)
05/06/2002 08:50:00 AM
funny.
05/06/2002 08:32:00 AM
This gave me a chuckle.
05/06/2002 08:29:00 AM
Great idea. Hilarious! I wish the exposure was better balanced, more light on the face of the statue, less on the hand and even light on the product.
05/06/2002 07:46:00 AM
who is that anyway? good pic though
05/06/2002 06:53:00 AM
Great idea! The angle works well, but there doesn't seem to be enough light on the statue's face... The glare on the bottle itself should've been removed as well.
05/06/2002 05:22:00 AM
This is so cute! I bet they find stuff in this statue's hands all the time!
05/06/2002 03:25:00 PM
Extremely difficult to light a picture like this correctly. Probably the best result possible without professional equipment though.
