Nice set up. The parts that are out of focus and the absence of numbers really forces the eye to the "8"

would be better if the balls r clean up a little, too much dirt on the white part of the ball.

Good idea to turn the other numbers away to keep the attention on the eight ball. Wish it weren't right in the center of the frame. Seems a bit underexposed, as well.

I think for a pool shot, this could be done better (see Langdon's winning entry for table shot). I'm not suggesting copying that style, but the off center framing and the focus of this shot aren't that appealing to me.

I love this picture.. The purple ball behind the eight ball bothers my eyes..

Composition looks a litlle tilted to the right. I like the DOF with the focus on the 8 ball. The overhead lights distract a little to me, but overall, a good effort.

nice close up

I like the composition, but I think I would've preferred a little more DOF in the foreground (or crop out the first row of balls). Alternatively, add them in the back so that there's less of just blank background.

That's going to be one tough shot!

Tight depth of field, good colors but a little dark. Interesting shot though.

Nice DOF, though I dislike the angle -- there's too much dead space at the top.

Your focus is right on target for this photo.

Nice angle shot

You have done an excellent job with depth of field in this photo... Perfect focus on the 8-ball... My eyes are drawn directly to the object of the photo.. nice work!

I am really trying to like photos with the foreground out of focus.....honest I am...........

I love the perfect DOF in this photo. This takes the somewhat clichè "bunch of eggs" shots and gives it a new twist. That dead space at the top of the image bothers me. I don't think you could have got the same DOF with a more directly overhead shot, but what if you created the illusion of a set of pool balls that had been racked when they were actually spread out over the table a little bit? This may not make sense. If you're curious about what I mean, email me when the voting is over.

Great use of depth of field to focus the eye on the key point. A bit dark at the back.

I'm sure i've heard that name before....... but 8/10 nonetheless!!!!

Subject stands out well. Good use of lowlight technique.

dirty balls
05/20/2002 01:32:00 PM
Might be more pleasing to the eyes if the 8 ball was clean. Another thought would be to not be so straight on to the balls and take the photo more at an angle.
05/20/2002 01:21:00 PM
very nice job getting the focus only on the eight ball.
05/20/2002 01:17:00 PM
The out of focus ball front and center is very distracting. Greater depth of field would help. If you're going for a narrow depth of field perspective, then maybe increase the camera angle slightly (or crop the photo) to minimize the foreground ugliness.

I can't say it!

Good focus job.

Is this macro? I think the photo would have more umph if they would have all been clear.
