Thanks for all the comments and votes.
Well, like some of you already noticed, the bee is dead. It's lying on top of a sheet of glass while my finger is below the glass. No bee training and no risk of being stung :)
It wasn't my goal to make a perfectly sharp macrophoto of a bee, but a balanced photo that shows the tension between the bee and the fingertip. I made a shot on which the bee is perfectly in focus but I didn't like it because it took all of the viewers attention to the bee only.
After reading the comments about it, I did a try-out with a blue background but it didn't look too well because the blue didn̢۪t match witch the color of the finger. I think blue would look better though if it would be a bright colored flower instead of a finger.
Don't worry Swashbuckler, the bee killed itself :). It was trying to escape trough a closed window and bees seem to keep trying to escape until they die (BTW before I get any complaints, there was no way I could save the it. The window can't be opened and the bee was acting pretty aggressive so I didn't dare to catch it).
I just came to my mind that it actaully might be possible to do a shot like this with a living bee by putting honey on my finger. I don̢۪t think I̢۪m gonna try it though :)

This seems like a pretty good shot, but I am wondering if you have a Bee Circus. :)~ I think I I would have chopped more off the top. |

Good use of a dead/frozen bee. Would have given this top mark but for what I see as a few small flaws. First the focus isn't quite where it needs to be -- the bee is a little out of focus. Second, while I really like the simple background, I wish it was some other color that could accentuate the bee and fingertip. Finally, the bee looks dead because the antennas are hanging down. (Hopefully I'm not being ignorant and bee antennas do hang down -- if they do, well, I messed up.) Very clever idea though. |

An extremely difficult shot. Its can be improved upon, fewer reflections, sharper image, better contract with background, etc. But Im still giving it a 10. Did you refridgerate it or use a dead bee at all? |

Great shot. Is the bee actually moving or is this setup with a dead bee on glass? A friend of mine thought it might be since there is no motion trail. Either way, I'm very impressed and gave you a 10. Let us know how you did it. |

Amazing photograph! Excellent composition -- and almost impossible to imagine how you would freeze this action. Is it a dead bee sitting on glass? One of the best photographs this week -- great job! 10 (LanSnake) |

A little too much space at the top,but this is great!!! |
|
|
07/16/2002 12:07:00 PM |
Wow, this is so much better than my bee shot from last week, but there is NO way this puppy is alive. Wing speed vs. Digital cam shutter speed alone. So, how did you do this? Normally, bees completely fold up their legs when dead. Stephan will be mad if you killed this bee for the shot (don't tell him). 10 Swash |

how in the world did you get this shot? jeepers, I'm impressed. I would reccomend converting it to black and white, though, to get rid of the pink in the finger, and toning down the brightness just a tad. |

Bee in flight is cool...but your background is really dull. Sorry...imagine how much more the colors would pop on a light blue background. Too much dead space on the top too. 6 Lisa |

Great capture. Don't tell me you spent all week training a bee ;-) I assume that by the lack of motionin the wings that the bee is mounted. Great effect "9" Dogman;-) |
