Always one of my favs of you. Me and Ethan are taking a stroll through your work.

I love partriotism and the American Flag. I also love it in color. I would love to see this in color. As for the 48 star flag, I'd love to get my hands on one of them. My last one wore out. Don't let anyone put you down on this photo. It is fantastic and has a wonderful subject. PTL

I also like the shadow on half of her face. To me that coupled with the whole thing in B&W says there's a saddness about what's going on right now in the world. It adds to the who photo.

When is waving the flag a cheap gimmick? I admit that when I first saw this I reacted from a gut suspicion that symbols were being exploited. But the picture held me and I wavered back and forth and back and forth in the voting phase. I finally gave it an 8. Very nice shot. And I love the b&w.

Interesting B&W -- hope it's not getting too slammed for the patriotism. The left side of the model's face (our right) is a touch too dark, I think, for this picture -- maybe a little bit of a bounce to fill in some of the details? I also am trying to figure out why you're using an older flag with only 48 stars. I confess, I'm not getting the symbolism if you're trying to convey something.

Nice portrait, her expression is so strong, you could have cropped closer on the face to make a more dramatic impact. You don's need to see the whole flag on the background, just a litle hint of it bieng there in more interesting (like the first row of stars)

Very good composition and technically very good. I think what is needed to push this over is for the model's eyes to engage the viewer. We see that she is in some depth of emotion, but we need to see her eyes. The eyes are the gateway to the soul.

This is stronger but harder to evaluate because of its topicality. I know what I'd be trying to convey if I were presenting this, but I don't have time right now to try and figure out your take on matters -- i.e. I guess I feel there's some ambiguity to it (not necessarily bad!).

GREAT photo. The b/w really appeals with this image. It says something - reaches out. Her expression is perfect for this. As I look at this, I try to be objective and look at it as if I weren't American (or at least try) and it is still emotional. There is a lot of sadness here. Personally, I'm a little tired of the trivial patriotism - but to me this is not that at all. Just curious - was this staged? If so - great imagination/creativity - If not, great eye for catching this.
Excellent photographic talent.

sorry, seeing 'the red white and blue' in b&w doesn't do much for me - I do give you credit for posting the flag here, most viewers dislike it. the lighting on her right arm is too hot, the flag is bowed in the center at top - and why the sullen face? She's got the best colors on she should be happy (bills and taxes...what's not to love?!?) and show them off in red white and blue! good job. 5 cthenk

Nice use of b&w... wonderful look on her face... great worn sweater... 7 sjgleah

Creative.

Pensive, but nice. Photo is O.K., but I'm not too crazy about how black and white makes the flag look like it's only two colors. 7 Swash

I'm not sure if I like this picture in black and white. In some ways I really do and in some ways I don't. her face and the texture of the jacket really come out in black and white. But you use the colors of the flag. The blue field and the red lines look almost the same color. Also the lines on her jacket appear to be overexposed.

Very good exposure. Nicely composed.
07/18/2002 10:52:00 PM
Hmmm, shall I say your model doesn't look to be too happy. Other than that, I like how you have this composed with the flag's stars on her right, and the shirt's stars on her left. I know you probably have a reason for having this in BW, it does have a certain mood to it, but how did it look in color?
07/18/2002 10:35:00 PM
Nice concept
07/18/2002 04:20:00 PM
I really missed the color in this image. Otherwise it's a beutiful portrait.
07/18/2002 01:19:00 PM
this is a phenomenal black and white. it's almost too busybut i really love the concept. I would have made an attempt to cut the 'red' flag line out of the top of the image and let the white line be at the top edge.... great shot = 9 - jmsetzler

nice flag image contrasts; sullen girl works well here too; good range of tonal values
07/18/2002 02:42:00 AM
Fantastic! I love how the stripes on her shirt coorespond to the stripes on the flag in the background and how the stars on her shirt are in the opposite corner of the stars on the flag. her expression is also great. Excellent job!

i wish she was looking at the camera, but I like this image very much
07/17/2002 07:19:00 PM
Nice picture, contrast is a bit harsh, otherwise great job.
07/17/2002 10:54:00 AM
I like the B&W
07/17/2002 10:11:00 AM
wow. stars and stripes. interesting.

I'm sorry too many stars and stripes for this non-merkians taste!
07/17/2002 09:31:00 AM
Would hang this on my wall in a heartbeat! My wife was a little upset that you used a flag that left out Hawaii, but she'll get over it :)

It's nice to see some portraiture, especially such an honest image. Very striking, indeed!

Good composition ... Good subject ... Excellent contrast for a &W ... Focus is good ... My personal preferences say the world is a wash in color though ... 8 for a very good B & W. RLS

I'm sure this would sell in America.
07/16/2002 10:54:00 AM
I like this...but why does she look sullen? If she's making a statement, shouldn't she be looking at you? 7 Lisa
07/16/2002 09:27:00 AM
technically well taken shot. Could maybe do with some fill light on her left side ?

Strange expression on her face
07/16/2002 08:21:00 AM
Very emoitional "main street USA"-like look. The flag seems to be in better focus than she is. I don't know if this was intentional, but I'd like to see it the other way around.
07/16/2002 02:55:00 AM
neat shot. the textures are simply beautiful. I love how she's looking off to the side, almost unsure of something.
07/16/2002 12:44:00 AM
she looks sad
07/15/2002 07:35:00 PM
Where'd you get a flag with 48 stars? B&W interesting choice for this photo
07/15/2002 07:15:00 PM
This reminds me of a journalism photo. This is great ! I like that she isn't looking right at you like a statue. This looks like a 60's Viet Nam photo from some support group...well for that matter it fits the US today ! GREAT job !!!! = 10 Shiiizzzam

Excellent concept, capture of expression and superior choice to use black and white !

Seems a little bright in some areas. 6

Interesting portrait. The woman looks very suspicious looking off to the side like that to me...so I don't what message this is supposed to be giving. I guess it's supposed to be one of resolute determination judging from the title. I'd have preferred her outfit to be a bit less strongly lighted so that it would blend in more with the flag in the background which would emphasize your 'indivisible' theme a bit more. I guess I'm assuming this is set up, so my comments are revolving around that...if this is candid then it's extremely excellent :-)
07/15/2002 01:14:00 PM
Real nice shot. The white on her left is too harsh, fried. I know it's what the camera was using to make it's adjustments. Still this is a moving photo, and she is just perfectly wonderful. Great expression for this shot. Kee

Grabs my patriotism but not my WOW factor, technicaly very well done.
07/15/2002 09:03:00 AM
Ok picture, but the subject (american flag) is tired...
07/15/2002 09:00:00 AM
Well, I have only been voting for two weeks, however this is my first 10 so you win the prize. The expression and something about the contrasting textures between the shirt and the flag just work for me. I am curious if you have a color version of this, however I feel that the B&W was a better choice. Great Shot. --Agamemnon

Nice lighting
07/15/2002 02:05:00 AM
Good subject and composition. I do like black and white, and I think it does work on some of the textures in this image, but I think color might have worked better here. Maybe desaturated color like you see in Saving Private Ryan
07/15/2002 12:17:00 AM
There seems to be just a smidge too much light on the lines on her shirt -- but GREAT photo overall. Well done ! 6
