Challenge: Empty Room (Advanced Editing IV)
Camera: Nikon D200
Lens: Sigma 17-35mm f/2.8-4.0 EX Aspherical HSM for Nikon
Location: Home
Date: Jun 2, 2006
Aperture: f7.1
ISO: 100
Shutter: 1.3 sec.
Galleries: Emotive
Date Uploaded: Jun 2, 2006

Perfect timing for the challenge; we just finished remodeling this room and it’s completely empty.
For lighting, I used a Smith Victor, 250-watt Flood Light; camera on a tripod as close as possible to the floor on the opposite corner of the room with my widest 17-35mm lens.

------------------------

Initially, I was hesitant regarding whether my photo satisfied the challenge requirements of having only one object within the room (hanger and dress). Thus, I turned off my “score and update” button, for fear of receiving low scores. However, upon receiving your great comments regarding this photo, I was thrilled, and began to look at all the scores again.

Thanks everyone for the wonderful comments and votes.

My top pick...and I am no fan of selective desaturation. It really works here, though. Beautiful lighting and composition. With its emotive content this image has a life outside the confines of this challenge.

My favourite in this challenge, very nice details. Interesting composition but I wish the top of the door wasn't cut.

Nice use of lighting. I like how the light leads to the dress. And the bright red really stands out.

06/11/2006 10:04:27 PM
This is one I really like. Simple and to the point. The light through the door lighting up the dress works really well. Good luck in the challenge!

I really like the set up of this shot.

Good time to use this technique; nice job with the lighting and angles. For some reason, I think your "message" might come across better if the dress were some color other than a passionate red, maybe mourning purple or some othe "cold" color.

perfect adn well executed. awesome black and gray and bright white and red. The only reason I wouldn't give it a ten, is that in my own mind I don't see it as a extraordinary photographic achievement, its a great technique that would work just as well on film. That being said, you still get a ten because its as good as anything else in the challenge, and much better than anything I could do; good luck.

One of my favorites of the challenge. It's very simple, but the way it's processed and the use of light makes it very powerful. 9 from me. :)

Love the splash of color and the clear visual storytelling. I would have flipped the image horizontally to put the red "finale" at the end, but one of my top picks nonetheless. 9

not totally enthused with the title (lacks a certain subtlety!) but the image itself is wonderfully composed and expertly presented. you've given a bona fide excuse for selective desat, which i feel is more often than not used totally wrongly. it works GLORiously here. every detail / element is perfectly positioned and treated - the light from the door, the door, the way the hanger appears to be floating. it gives the impression that you took a lot of care and attention to get this shot just so. easily one of my favourites this week. 10.

I think this will do very well. Good lighting, subject and selective desat. I would have been tempted to clone out the power points on the walls and maybe crop a little tigher at the bottom, that's just nitpicking :-)

I like how the light highlights the dress in the photo--great photo. Nice colors and texture/tones also. It contains nice emotion in the message of the photo as well...you can just imagine the wife/girlfriend, etc having left and leaving the dress behind.

I am not voting, unfortunately, I don't have time to go through the whole challenge. But I was curious to see the submissions and yours is just fantastic. I love the selected desat, the light and shadow play and the hues of the walls and door. Not to mention the story the image tells. I hope you place high in the challenge! :)

Interesting concept. I considered something like this but couldn't carry it off. I like the light peeking through the crack in the door. The single red of the dress makes for nice impact.

I thought about using a dress on a hanger and then worried the DNMC nazis would get me for taking 2 items into the room! Neat treatment here - I like the light just showing through the door.
