Challenge Entry No. 142

This was a bit tricky to take as there was still enough ambient lighting around to gain a 30 second exposure. I shot this last night at 8:45pm at a bayside park that happens to close at 9pm. With 15 minutes in hand, I stacked filters up the kazoo. What you see here is a filter combination that consists of:

1. CPL mounted on the lens filter ring
2. ND8 Cokin (P)
3. Gradiated ND 4 Cokin (P)
4. Gradiated Sunset Cokin (P)

Not certain if folks would see the 30 second exposure here but since it's grounds for DQ, I hope they give this image the benefit of the doubt.

I set the mode to Av and started shooting. This is one of only 5 shots I was able to take. Two hours of waiting and only 5 shots to show :(

Post processing involved adjusting hue and saturation to create more magentas in the skies. Used levels and curves to gain the saturation.

This my friends is a great example of the trademarked Hyper-Saturation™. Jejejeje™

Ran through NI a couple of times due to those damn sensor dust. Cropped and saved for web with a 1 pixel stroke.

The Fixx
Red Skies

Red skies at night, red skies at night
Wo oh, wo oh oh oh oh oh oh oh
Red skies at night, red skies at night
Wo oh, wo oh oh oh oh oh oh oh

Should have taken warning
It's just, people mourning, running, hiding, lost
You can't find, find a place to go
So it's red skies at night, red skies at night
Wo oh, wo oh oh oh oh

Should have taken warning
It's just, people mourning, running, hiding, lost
You can't find, find a place to go
So it's red skies at night, red skies at night
Wo oh, wo oh oh oh oh oh oh oh
Red skies at night, red skies at night
Wo oh, wo oh oh

Someone's taking over
And it looks like they're aiming right at you
Someone says, "We'll be dead by morning"
Someone cries, leaving

Red eyes at night, red eyes at night
Oh, wo oh oh oh oh oh oh oh

Red skies at night, red skies at night, red skies at night

Red skies at night, red skies at night
Wo oh, wo oh oh oh oh oh oh oh
Red skies at night, red skies at night
Wo oh, wo oh oh oh oh oh

Rikki, this is incredible. Every time I turn around, you're on the front page again. The picture is great, the technical setup is impressive, and the processing is characteristically bold and elegant. Congratulations!

Hi Rikki, congrats on your ribbon. Someday maybe even I will get one.

What I loved about this was the red sky, violet water and the green grass. I thought that looked wonderful. I think you could have done it with a few less filters. I shot at dawn once and it was really really a red sky and I called it "Sailor be Warned" you can see it here:

I love when we can capture with our cameras what most people miss in day to day life. You did real good here.

LOL! Jason was so intent of catching up to us in the ribbon race so I just thought it was SO funny seeing your name on the front page at the same time as his. Congrats dude, I gotta say I didn´t like this as much as the majority of the voters, gave it a 6 but fortunately different people have different tastes and still a 6 from me means better than average. Now I really got to put my foot down on the gas petal, it simply will not fly you having more ribbons than me :)

One of my favorites to win this challenge. The color tones are pleasing in a surreal kind of way. The composition is beautiful with so much negative space for us to wander up into. The horizon seems a tad oversharpened. Overall, very pleasing to the eye. Thanks for a great entry!

I am sure the intention was to leave a lot of negative space on the top of the frame. IMO, it is too much. I like the many different layers of the shot from the green grass, the blue water, the tan/orange hillside to the left, to the redish sky. Overall a pretty good image.

06/22/2006 10:30:37 AM
Interesting idea, but I think you've manipulated it too much. I can see banding in the sky colours, particularly toward the top left corner. The red in the centre of the frame is a bit too overpowering.
