Challenge: Pencil (Classic Editing)
Camera: Canon PowerShot Pro 90 IS
Location: Lansing, MI
Date: Aug 13, 2002
Aperture: 8.0
ISO: 100
Shutter: .3

This is my first attempt at a dpchallenge challenge. I wanted something different for my pencil, so I broke it and chewed it and photographed it. The pic looked very bland so I kept adding elements until I got the submitted pic.

too close to home...but great idea. And I think the whole idea of taking prozac is that it's supposed to counteract this effect...She should have tried Zoloft... :)

Nicely staged photo. Good focus on the writing and bottles.

Not the proper forum for such a morbid photo.

I am not sure where the focus should be here. On the pencil?
Or what does the pencil have to do with the whole theme of the pic?
It does fit the challenge but the pencil plays such a background part, including the title...

Makes a statement and gives a message. Well done

Very good job of storytelling with this photo.

so evil, so sad, so real....but at last so empty this picture dont have a little something of live and less something of death...

Very intense and disturbing. I think I'd like this with higher contrast black and white, since it's so dramatic. I love the composition though.

image is not sharp.
lighting is dim

This photo is kind of disturbing to me. For a couple of reasons. First, your name is on the bottles along with a RX refill number. Second, it is depicting a suicide. That's disturbing all on it's own, and the person in the photo looks young. I took a second look and realized that your address wasn't on the bottles, nor a pharmacy phone number, so that gave me the hope that you made up the labels. Also, I noticed the wedding band and kind of got a chuckle. Any married woman, I think, can relate. Not to the suicide, but to the need for nerve pills. Setting that all aside, the photo is nicely done. Lighting is great, the b&w helps add saddness. I almost wish I could read the whole letter, but I think that the important parts are clear. "Darling, I love you, and I am sorry" is what I can read, and that really is enough to get the point across. There is a soft focus which works well in this photo. That also adds to the saddness. Disturbing, yet very nicely done. after getting over the initial shock of this, it is a well executed photo. Nice job and good luck in the challenge.

Emotive subject matter and interesting composition. My personal preference would be for much more contrast - a little brighter (but perhaps the darkness about it is deliberately reflective of the subject matter?). A brave subject matter to tackle.

OOH. Powerful, but the lighting seems a tad dark, and i'dlike to be able to read the whole note. Still excellent. 8 -lennier

I came back to enter a comment. I like the picture and the imagination. Not sure the pencil would be broken in that case and the letter 'neat' but that's a detail. Maybe the face could have been less 'dark'. But I like it. Oh and .. I would not have cut the prozac bottle just a little like this, I would have had them completly in the picture or cut 'in half'.
Overall : 7

nice enough looking picture, looks a little staged, funny it doesnt even matter if it's staged if it looks staged
might wanna watch having your prescription numbers on the internet, like the folks that had their tax returns and ssn#s, thats a privacy hazard right?
peace.

Good humorous photo - I do wish there was a bit more contrast though.

Eek! overdose!?
08/19/2002 07:19:00 PM
Great example of the classic mangled pencil as anxiety manifested
08/19/2002 07:10:00 PM
A little heavy for me but obviously had some thought behind it. Might like to see the contract cranked up a smidge...
08/19/2002 05:23:00 PM
very dramatic!
08/19/2002 04:50:00 PM
Ugh! Too depressing and sad. I hope no one is saying this is too dark: it needs to be - sets the mood.

Drama, b&w! Creative work, thinking. I like it. Score 7 ~Kee

I can see the headline now "Another Victem of dpChallenge Excessive Compulsive Disorder". ;-o
I feel the b/w works well for this photo and the composition is good. Did you intend the soft image, in my opinion this tragic theme would benifitt from the harsh feel that a little unsharp mask would provide.
08/19/2002 01:04:00 PM
Nice B&W but the pencil is about the last thing I noticed.
08/19/2002 11:48:00 AM
never hear of an OD on prozak
08/19/2002 11:06:00 AM
finally, nice manicured hands for a photo! nice b&w and good photo
08/19/2002 10:22:00 AM
Wow...this picture conveys such emotion. So sad...love the picture, tho. Any picture that can bring emotion, no matter what the emotion, to me, is a good picture.
08/19/2002 09:49:00 AM
wow...this is very creative.....it looks like a LOT of work went into setting this up (including chewing on the pencil!)
I like it a lot.
08/19/2002 08:12:00 AM
Disturbing photo
08/19/2002 05:59:00 AM
