Reflection for its own sake does not necessarily make for an interesting image... 4 sjgleah

This is very neat. The composition, soft focus, lovely light background, the scratches on the spoon's surface, and the reflection of the photographer all combine to make this photo appealing and intriguing to me. It's almost a little bit surreal. I don't really know what the spoon is doing there, but it seems to belong :). I feel like giving this 10 - lisae

Yet another one of those: a very original idea, but not consequently executed. Focus is poor, the spoon has spots and marks, and there is too much distracting background in the reflection, including the photographer. Plus, the top of the spoon is cut off.

Good use of reflection....Having the photographer and background appliances in the reflection are distracting. I would prefer the purity of the subject being reflected in the spoon.

This is the start of a nice creative idea for the challenge.
Need to think more about focus and composition next time...
Good luck! You have a creative mind. I can see it was working...

Nice idea, but there's not too much in focus.

This is an interesting concept for sure :) This is also a tough shot to do... Keeping yourself out of the reflection would have been practically impossible here... curved reflective surfaces make that tough... I'm not sure if your camera has depth of field control, but I would like this photo better if the tip of the pencil in the foreground was in focus as well... good shot :) - jmsetzler

I like the idea here - creative and pretty well done - however I am too distracted by the reflection of you in the spoon. Could you try the shot moving a step or two to the right or left and shooting at an angle? I am not sure if you would still get the relection that way - but it might work. Good focus in the spoon and pretty good lighting = 5

i wish the pencil tip were in focus too, but i know thats not always possible ;)

way cool. i love this. my first impression is the tip of the pencil should be in focus but then i realize the pencil is in focus in the reflection in the spoon. wonderful composition. very creative. 9

Neat idea - I like that I can see you in the photo but Im less happy about the big white thing to the left of you. Dunno what it and I realise it's REALLY hard to get rid of it. Your lighting is great, though and the DoF blurring the front of the pencil is great. Excellent concept and execution.

Good imagination. A little off on the technical side. Focus appears as problem not intentional.

nice idea, nicely controlled white background, good placement of objects. the thing that keeps drawing my eye is the really out of focus tip of the pen. i know it's not supposed to be the focus of the shot, and that's why the DOF is that way, but my eye still wanders there. there are also too many details reflecting in the spoon other than you and the pen and the camera. i know i'm probably asking a lot, but do you have a plain wall in the house that you could've used as background (and, yes, i have a very hard time finding one in mine, too, but i think it would make a difference to the photo). -- gr8photos (3)

This is a pretty cool idea and your lighting is good. Did you want to be in the photo? I almost think that you are in the photo on purpose. Not sure why I think that. I think it's cause the title is simply "reflection" not "reflection of a pencil". For comparrision, I'd like to see it also at a different angle with a sollid color background in the spoon. Might look too much like an ad though. The focus is soft for my taste, but that's only an opinion and it doesn't take anything away from the photo. Good luck in the challenge

I like the DOF use, unusual to see foreground being the bit that isn't in focus, and like the way the whole pencil is in the reflection and points back at the photographer.

Nice camera!

In the thumbnail I couldnt tell what was in the reflection besides the pencil. Now that I can see that it you I really think Its cool. Only wish the pencil were a little clearer

Creative use of reflection!

I like this shot allot, but I know that everyone is going to rip on you for showing you camera. for some reason everyone hates that. Oh well i give you a (7)

It may be just me, but I almost think that the pencil being blurry in the foreground is destracting. I think I would like this better with a clear pencil as well as the spoon / reflection. I really liked your idea though!
08/19/2002 04:05:00 PM
This would be a nifty picture if the rest of the reflection wasn't a laundry room scene.
08/19/2002 03:44:00 PM
Nice......very nice. LOL clever work. Score 7 ~Kee
08/19/2002 01:18:00 PM
I like the concept but the setting could be improved a little, I mean a shinier spoon and more attractive background.
08/19/2002 10:31:00 AM
good artistic shot. like the blur but im sure most people hate it :)
08/19/2002 10:15:00 AM
I'm left wondering why you would want you, your camera and the 'frig in this reflection. Hmmm.
08/19/2002 02:40:00 AM
I think having the point in focus might have worked better. I like what you attempted, but a different angle, where the camera wasnt showing might have also worked better. 5 -lennier
08/19/2002 01:09:00 AM
a reflection of only the pencil might be more effective in keeping with the simplicity of the shot
08/19/2002 01:07:00 AM
The point of the pencil which happens to be in the foreground is way out of focus and that happens to be the first thing you see when looking at this picture. The reflections through the spoon aren't particularly attractive either, background too cluttered and the photographer and the camera too prominent. Nice idea but you should have explored this more.
