This reminds me a little bit of one of Joe Cornish's photos (//www.joecornish.com/gallery/ne/8.htm), I love the photographic use of signs in remote locations. Here, we're missing the dramatic use of light that makes Cornish's shot so spectacular, I feel the use of light here is a bit dull.
The tree and sign is what makes the composition work so well here, and the fact that the sign points to the tree is a nice touch. There is some shadow detail left in the sign that could have been salvaged, I personally don't think the sign works well here in silhouette.
It's a shame that the distant hill is so hazy, especially as this was for a deep DOF challenge... was a UV filter used here? Perhaps this may have helped a little. The foreground textures are great, I like the arrangement of grass very much... but I feel that the shot in general is lacking in sharpness. Did you use USM? If so, perhaps the tripod you used wasn't good enough at staying stable in the wind for your 1/10 second shot.
I would have tweaked the greens a little in Photoshop, the colours are a little on the flat side for my taste here.
In general, a nice shot of the English countryside with effective composition, although perhaps lacking in effective light.

Beautiful, lush, well composed scene. The top of the post looks a little too (artificially) dark and it's a shame you can't read the 'Footpath' wording. A little fill flash could have sorted this. Love the grass and there's plenty of DOF. |

I like the photo. I think that it would look a little better if you cropped more off the bottom, like about up to the dirt spot, or maybe crop off some of the dirt spot. that will get people to focus more on the view than on the ground. |
