blends in with background.

A different view of the skater might've been more dramatic. He doesn't look like he's doing a really big trick, so maybe a lower angle would've made him look higher.

Nice B/W, but I have trouble picking subject out of the rest of the picture.
04/20/2002 12:26:00 AM
I like the shadow, but this is a bad choice for a B&W shot because the skater blends into the background. You'll need better contrast and lighting to pull off a B&W.

I really enjoy this image. I like the skater in the air, the shadow completly seperated. The background works well too. The only thing I could think of to make this look better would be to take it from a lower angle to get more contrast between the skater and the background.
04/19/2002 05:24:00 PM
The background is too busy--I lose the skater. Would it have been better in color? I like the shadow.
04/19/2002 09:16:00 AM
A different perspective showing his face might have made it more effective. At first, I didn't like all the stuff in the background, taking a second look, I think it might add to the picture, especially since it is black and white and the skater is in dark clothes. A color shot might have been too busy.

black and white is good. use of shadow to show flight is also very smart. thanks.
04/19/2002 01:53:00 AM
i love the composition of the concrete and the black an white works great, but the skater is a little lost in the background.

I admire anyone willing to try their hand a black and white. Tough task requiring a good eye for contrast and shading. This one seems especially tough to pull off with the busy backgroulnd. Good effort.
04/18/2002 06:06:00 PM
Maybe if you had a different background I could see the subject a little better.
04/18/2002 05:16:00 PM
I like the picture
04/18/2002 01:12:00 PM
Kind of hard to make out the subject against that background. Maybe a different angle and/or tighter cropping?
04/18/2002 11:34:00 AM
I like the shadow, nice depth of field also.
04/18/2002 11:19:00 AM
Subject gets lost in the busy background. Good shadow, tho.
04/18/2002 10:05:00 AM
great stop action. I like the shadow. Too bad his hand isn't more clearly defined by a less busy background. Good shot!
04/17/2002 05:22:00 PM
The skater feels almost hidden in amoungst the signs and houses.
04/17/2002 11:00:00 AM
this would be cooler if the kid werent 'lost' in the busiest part of the pic. too bad he didnt wear white. kudos for sharp focus and good exposure.
04/16/2002 08:51:00 PM
Like it. This is the skate park by the Seattle Center, right?
04/16/2002 05:35:00 PM
One thing I do when photographing rookie skaters is I get down close to the ground to make it look like their trick is bigger than it actually is, getting down lower may have also help you with your background issue, I like how the shadow is in the shot, very nice.
04/16/2002 05:31:00 PM
lovely blackandwhite.
04/16/2002 01:34:00 PM
well captured but background detracts from image
04/16/2002 01:24:00 PM
The skater seems to get lost in the background
04/16/2002 12:45:00 PM
You captured the skateboarder very well. I think that if you pulled in closer to the subject the background would not be as distracting. Overall, a very nice photo.

A lower angle might have made this shot more interesting -- and it would have made your friend look higher too :)

Truly great photo. Normally you might think the background would distract but in this photo it is an integral part of the mood. The fence and the billboards and th buildings in the back give it the urban feel needed. Great shadow, great contrast and exposure. I love the way the skateboarders clothes came out all black to silouhette him against the background. Maybe a lower angle on the skateboarder to great contrast his body against the sky but thats nit picking and you might lose the shadow on the ground and the nice contrast of the concrete. One of my top 3 and a beautiful composition.
04/16/2002 09:09:00 AM
the background distracts from the main object
04/16/2002 08:22:00 AM
Nice shot but the boarder gets a little lost in the background, he may of stood out more if it was a color shot.
04/16/2002 07:32:00 AM
nice. being in b+w seems to concentrate the pic firmly on the skater ... away from (probably) distracting signs in the background. One question ... did he land it? :)
04/16/2002 05:45:00 AM
I like the shadow under the jumper. It adds to the photo. I might have cropped it. Less sky and less track. Like the B&W.
04/15/2002 09:55:00 PM
Nice shot
04/15/2002 06:37:00 PM
I think I would have cropped it more.
04/15/2002 05:02:00 PM
I know this place. I have some very similar shots myself. Maybe you could have gotten lower to try to get a skater against the bright sky instead of the similarily shaded background as the boy's shirt.
04/15/2002 02:02:00 PM
I don't know the original colors in the scene, but I'm guessing that using grayscale helps emphasize the foreground over an otherwise brighter background.
04/15/2002 01:08:00 PM
I like black and whites and I plan to try to incorporate that into challenges in the future myself. I like the action in this shot. I would like it better if the skater was not centered in the frame.... Subject orientation to the upper left a bit in this photo would increase the drama a bit. Also, maybe if you were just a little closer to the action...
Nice shot!

It's a cool shot, I like the shadow, but the black and white I'm not sure was a good idea. Against that background the black clothing just makes him fade to where you can barely see him. (Or her, to be fair!)
04/15/2002 11:36:00 AM
might have been cooler shot from the other side.. nice job
04/15/2002 09:41:00 AM
Good action. Would love to see it cropped closer to make subject more prominent.
04/15/2002 09:04:00 AM
good stopped motion, but could have been a lot more dramatic if you'd tried a lower angle ? Good that you framed the guy and his shadow - maybe could have been closer and filled the frame more ?
04/15/2002 08:33:00 AM
GREAT concept. The only thing I see that would help is there is just too much going on in the background that takes away from your main subject. Maybe a closer shot or taken with him coming towards the camera from a different angle would have helped.
04/15/2002 07:14:00 AM
background's too busy but otherwise a great capture
04/15/2002 05:37:00 AM
a closer crop might have helped a bit
