Challenge: Something Old (Classic Editing)
Camera: Canon PowerShot S30
Location: Den
Date: Aug 1, 2002
Aperture: 5.0
ISO: 50
Shutter: 13
Date Uploaded: Aug 2, 2002

Sticking my hand in the photo was an after thought. I had been working on a "straight" shot. But after I got to working with the image I found that I liked the greyscale very much. This particular version was way overcooked as far as contrast and sharpening go, adding grain to iso 50! I tried it color, but the orange cast of the buttons was absolutely garish. Also, I hate the pixelated jaggies on the highlights above and below the hand. I tried dozens of "remakes" to eliminate this, but never got another version that had the same "pop" as this one. (The console dates from the late 40's, check out this vintage ad: //www.grillecloth.com/radioart/dorne.html)

For anyone that wants to know how this is done, here goes: There is no real trick, it is simple enough, but you have to have a camera that can keep the shutter open for at least 10 or 15 seconds. This shot was 13 seconds long with no flash fill. With the shutter open I quickly stuck my hand on the knob, held it very still for about 3 seconds, then moved it quickly out. If you do this smoothly, and hold your hand still enough, it leaves a nice crisp outline in the finished photo.

And thanks to all that commented!

Very nicely done. Like the ghostlike nature ofthe hand, the obvious age of the radio. 7 sjgleah

This is very good and I think the photographer should get points for creativity for his 'ghostly' hand. Nice work!

Nicely capture the vintage mood... The ghostly hand adds to the sensation of a by-gone era.

I like the ephemeral, knob turning hand...
The ghost of radio lands past!

Like the ghost hand. Photo a little too dark at top left.

Like the ghost effect... transient exageration of the aged device--smart.

Very cool! I esp. like the faded hand. This is the kind of added action that several others in this challenge needed, well done! In fact, this is sooo good, I have to award you two more points! 10 Swash

meets the challenge, although not a particularly interesting photograph. It looks like you tried to add interest with the angle, and it helped, but not enough.

very interesting subject... the old radio is quite nice :) I also like the hand in the image as well... it brings life to the otherwise inanimate subject :) The ghosting effect is neat, but I would love to know why you chose to do that... It *is* an interesting effect but i find that it attracts my attention moreso than the actual radio maybe... good shot... = 8 - jmsetzler

I'm very new to wanting to take pictures, I actually haven't submitted a pic on here yet and only have a regular digital camera with no attachments or anything. Forgive me if I sound photo illiterate, but how did you accomplish the whole see through hand affect? I like it a lot. Thanks for the oppertunity to view your pic.

Good use of fillflash/long exposure. I might have been tempted to limit the photo scope to just the lower knobs and pushbuttons. Good, overall, though.

Neat radio and nice composition. Good choice for black and white. Definitely reminds me of the time before I was alive :-)

Being in b&w and having the second exposure with the hand in the frame is kind of cool for a 'ghost-like' effect, which helps give it somewhat of an 'old' feeling.

I like this a lot. The radio is a good subject of old and the ghostly hand gives this photo a great sense of old.

Nice effect. Really like the idea of the long exposure. Otherwise, the hand would have been distracting. In this case, I find the hand adds to the composition. (7)

the almost ghostly hand is a nice touch for this shot. the shadows on the right are a little distracting, but overall a good idea for this challenge and b&w works well. -- gr8photos (6)

This is a nice picture with special effects. All of which came out pretty good. I am bothered with the overall contrast and sharpness. In my opinion any way. Autool

Great idea, up against some really inventive stuff in this challenge, but you've caught the theme really well with a technically unfaultable shot (10) Love the hand - makes it look like your seeing back in time...

Woooo - spooky, sneaky and scarily good. The perfect subject and an almost off-hand use of a clever effect. Im wondering if this might even be one of the rare photographs that would have benefited from sepia tone. Regardless - excellent concept, execution and technicals. No faults at all. Well done!

Along with 'Old Time Spying' this shot expressed time/age through technique (rather than only subject) best in my eyes. It seems you were going for an aged look with the shot however I think this hurts the smooth edges (The AM FM for instance) making it look oversharpened some. You may want to look at that again with the full size image... I leave it to you --10 Agamemnon
